The Master of Laws by Research (LLM Res) postgraduate research degree at UNSW Law & Justice prepares you for a career in advanced legal research or other professional roles. Our LLM by Research candidates are equipped with the research skills needed to move on to areas such as academia, the legal profession and policy development, whether this is for government, NGOs or inter-governmental agencies.

Admission to the Master of Laws by Research program requires completion of a recognised Bachelor of Laws degree with an Honours Class 2 (Division 1) or higher.Â
The bachelor's degree should have included a substantial research component, or the equivalent.Â
You must also submit a research proposal to be considered for this program. Admission to the LLM by Research program is subject to appropriate supervision being available.Â
The LLM by Research program involves conducting research and preparing a thesis of approximately 50,000 words in your chosen area of law. Candidates can complete the Master’s program in a minimum of 1.5 years and a maximum of 2 years full-time. Â
You'll be supervised by experts in your chosen area, who will help you develop insights and critical research skills in a supportive and stimulating university environment. Â
Compulsory coursework includes research ethics, research methods and data management. Â
