Statistician Scott Sisson elected Fellow of prestigious society
Scott Sisson of the School of Mathematics and Statistics was recognised for his outstanding contributions to the field of Bayesian analysis.
Scott Sisson of the School of Mathematics and Statistics was recognised for his outstanding contributions to the field of Bayesian analysis.
Scott Sisson has been named a Fellow of the International Society of Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). Established in 1992, ISBA aims to promote the development and application of Bayesian analysis. Â
The citation for his election reads: "The 2024 ISBA Fellow is awarded to Scott Sisson - for his outstanding contributions to research in Bayesian computation, for the promotion of Bayesian research and for his sustained leadership of the Australian Bayesian community, including the dedicated mentoring and supervision of a large number of junior Bayesian ¹û¶³app."Â
Professor Sisson is only the third Australian researcher to receive this honour, which is awarded biennially to individuals who have made significant contributions to statistical work through publication, teaching, or service.
"Bayesian analysis is one of the primary underlying inferential frameworks supporting recent advances in computational statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence", said Professor Sisson.
It's a huge honour to be recognised as having made outstanding contributions in this field, especially with only a handful of new Fellows named globally every two years.
"It's also slightly unnerving, as the list of ISBA Fellows includes ¹û¶³app who were household names in Bayesian research back when I was a PhD student. It's a very strange feeling to be listed alongside them!", said Professor Sisson.Â
Professor Sisson, who joined UNSW Mathematics and Statistics in 2003, is Director of the UNSW Data Science Hub (uDASH). Among his accolades, he was awarded the Service Medal of the Statistical Society of Australia in 2020, and a ARC Future Fellowship in 2017. Congratulations to Professor Sisson for his latest achievement, the prestigious ISBA Fellowship.Â
