We caught up with UNSW postgraduate students to get their tips on how to get the most out of your experience.
鈥淧ostgraduate study has helped me verify the kind of work I want to be doing,鈥 explains Rebecca, who chose to study a聽Master of Public Relations and Advertising聽after working as a Campaign and Project Manager. 聽
Meanwhile, Olivia, who studies a聽Master of Curating and Cultural Leadership听飞颈迟丑听UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture, wanted to ensure her knowledge remained industry-relevant. 聽
鈥淚 have been working in the arts industry for over 10 years. My current job allows me to engage with contemporary art, ideas and theories, but I was feeling as though my knowledge in these areas would be enhanced with further study.鈥
As a UNSW postgraduate student, you鈥檒l be part of a diverse and passionate community of students and academics. 聽
鈥淚 found a big difference in the level of engagement in comparison to my undergrad degree,鈥 explains Rebecca.
鈥淪tudents in my cohort came from different and diverse backgrounds, which I found added more intriguing angles and perspectives to course topics and classroom participation.鈥 聽
鈥淭ry and take the opportunities to engage in class discussions and ask your tutor any questions that you may have as the chances are someone else if possibly thinking the same thing.鈥澛
You鈥檒l also have several opportunities to undertake聽听补苍诲听career development programs. These services and programs are a great way to expand your networks and gain new experiences.
We all have busy schedules, but there are plenty of ways you can shape your study to fit your life and priorities.
Flexible learning options are built into many of UNSW鈥檚 postgraduate programs, including evening classes, online components and intensive courses. 聽
鈥淗aving classes available after 5pm is the only reason I am able to do my master鈥檚,鈥 says Olivia. 鈥淚鈥檓 very grateful for these options. Without this, I wouldn鈥檛 be able to study while working.鈥
Our three-term calendar, UNSW 3+, allows you to leverage聽the flexibility to spread聽your聽study load聽across聽the year, studying fewer courses per term聽to enable聽more in-depth聽learning.聽You only need to enrol once per year, which means you can plan your year to achieve your unique goals and ambitions.
鈥淔amiliarise yourself with the course outline and assessment schedule right at the beginning of the term, I am talking the first week,鈥 says Rebecca. 聽
Olivia found connecting with her tutors each week was essential for her success. 鈥淲hether it be after class or via email, checking in early helps me ensure that I am on track well before submission date.鈥澛
鈥淩ead the required readings before the associated classes and turn up to lectures. This is time-consuming at聽the moment but ends up saving time when it comes to the assessments,鈥 she says.
